new exhibitions

A busy Autumn and Winter have kept us from posting here for a while, but now we have some news. We will be participating in two off-site exhibitions next week during the Interior Design Show here in Toronto.

We will be showing a new porcelain chandelier at 'Radiant Dark' which has been organized by MADE and runs from February 20-27th.

We will also have a selection of our work (including a brand new object) in the 'Vesna Sontse' room created by Magic Pony at Come Up To My Room from Feb. 22-24 at the Gladstone Hotel (the event where we exhibited our jellyfish last year), and continuing at Magic Pony's gallery until March 20.

new installation

We have a new installation opening at Prime Gallery in Toronto, as part of a group exhibition called 'On the Cusp' with three other emerging craft artists.

There will be a public reception tonight: Thursday, October 4, from 6-8pm. The exhibition runs through October 27. We will post some photos soon.

We are so excited to be participating in 'come up to my room' the alternative design event taking place this weekend (the same weekend as the Interior Design Show). on the table

We are very excited that some of our work has been included in 'On The Table: 100 Years of Functional Ceramics in Canada' which opened at the Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art this week and continues until April 22. It is a fascinating show - definitely worth seeing if you are in Toronto. Also, the Museum's new renovation is really beautiful.

objects of longing

Here are some images of our piece called empty bowls in the 'Objects of Longing' exhibition at Harbourfront Centre (on display until March 11). It is a collection of pinched porcelain dishes in various sizes, with clear glaze and traces of white around the inner diameter (more clearly visible in the detail shot).

We will be showing new work as part of a group exhibition at Harbourfront Centre in Toronto. The show is called 'Object(s) of Longing' and was curated by Melanie Egan. It is opening this Friday, January 19th from 6-9pm, along with several other exhibitions in the building - many of them craft-based. ouvriers-designers

We found out about this great project done in 2005 from an old post on MoCo Loco.

"In partnership with Bernardaud Foundation, the 5.5 designers has developed especially for the Biennial a project entitled "ouvriers-designers ". The young creators intervened on several occasions during the year in the industrial chain of Bernardaud's porcelain factory, to frame a creative freedom punctually granted to certain workers at each step of industrial process, by taking the counterpoint or by authorizing some gestures usually impossible or prohibited in a standardized manufacturing process. They thus brought "disturbances" very individualized to certain traditional products of the Bernardaud range, which continue, then, the usual way of their perfect development.

Seven stages of manufacture (casting, calibration, enamelling, finishing, garnishing, transfer, spinning) were selected to illustrate the matter of the 5.5 designers to emphasize, thanks to the project "Designers Workmen", the intelligence of the hand, too often neglected nowadays."

For those who haven't seen it, this is the thesis project Alissa and I did together in our final year of Industrial Design at OCAD, two years ago. It is called hold. It is a collection of dinnerware with a hollow section to insulate your hand so you can hold your food comfortably.

wunderkammer

Something I'm very interested in at the moment are 'wunderkammer' or 'cabinets of curiosities'. These were collections of natural specimins and artifacts amassed by wealthy gentlemen in the 17th century, and were the precursor to modern natural history museums. These cabinets or rooms were filled with fantastic objects such as shells, preserved animals and birds, fossils, and man-made artifacts. These collections mixed fact with fiction, and combined the beautiful and grotesque.

bird wings and zeppelins

These feathery headpieces are from Alexander McQueen's Fall 2006 collection. I also love the airplane headpiece.

All this flying stuff reminds me of the current exhibit at the Ydessa Hendeles Art Foundation (one of the galleries I work at part time). Part of the exhibiton 'Predators and Prey' is a room of historical photographs of Zeppelins, and views from Zeppelins, taken around the world. There is also a series of press photos from the Hindenburg disaster. They are fascinating. The whole show is really great. Anyone in Toronto should check it out. The gallery is only open Saturdays from 12-5pm. The exhibition will be running for about a year.

first post

I'm not sure if I'm much of a blogging person, but I have been inspired by several lovely and inspiring blogs, such as designsponge and karin eriksson's style blog. These blogs have been a great source of information and inspiration for us lately, and now we'd like to try our own. This seems like a great way to remember and share the beautiful and interesting things we find. Hopefully, it will help us to keep people up to date on our projects, and to connect with other like-minded creative folk. I will be doing most of the posting, but hopfully Alissa will post occasionally as well. I won't be able to post every day, but hopefully I will post several things at least three times a week. We'll see...
